For most Australians and New Zealanders, Anzac Day is a very somber day. A day of remembrance to the fallen soldiers that sacrificed their lives on the shores of Gallipoli. A bloody battle where there were no winners, only brave men that fought and died for their country. Never to return home to their loved ones.
Today makes two years since I visited those very shores and remembered the heroic ones that came ashore in Turkey 98 years ago. An emotional dawn service is celebrated every year at ANZAC cove and a legendary pilgrimage that all Aussies and Kiwis should do once in their life.
Having experience Gallipoli on ANZAC day, I have such a better understanding of what went on, the treacherous conditions that our young soldiers faced that terrible morning. After the dawn service at the waters edge all attendees then make their way up the hill visiting grave sites, memorials and gardens. The Australians then head to Lone Pine to attend an Australian service while the Kiwis and Turks have their own services at their respective memorial sites. Lest we forget!
Such an important day for all Australians.
